Maps of Switzerland:

Swissgeo is a great place to get a map of every address in Switzerland. The address for the main conference location is: Universität Bern
Hochschulstrasse 4
3012 Bern

The Survey Department of Bern features an interactive map of Bern on its website.

Arriving by airplane:

The closest airport in the vicinity of the city is Bern-Belp (site is offered in German only). Bern-Belp is mostly being frequented by business travelers who need local and easy connections to various European cities. Passengers transfer between Bern-Belp and the city by train, bus, and/or taxi.

Most travelers, however, will enter Switzerland through her largest airports in Zürich-Kloten or Genève-Cointrin. Bern is excellently connected with the two airports by the Swiss Federal Railways' system, you will find the trainstations directly built into the airports with trains heading to Bern every 30 min. Visit SBB Online to query the exakt timetable and check out the following paragraph for information on traveling by train.

Arriving by train:

Traveling to Bern by train is very easy as it is one of the neural spots in the Swiss Federal Railways' network. Visit SBB Online to query the exakt timetable, purchase tickets and receive various other information. There is also a map avaible of Bern Main Station (German and French only). The university's main building is situated right next to the trainstation and can be reached easily using the elevators near track 13 up to the top floor. This map shows the location of the main building ("Hauptgebäude" in red letters) as well as the spot where you will exit the elevator ("Lift Bahnhof" in blue letters).

Arriving by car:

Arriving by car you are heading to Bern on the interstate ("Autobahn") A1 until you reach exit "Bern-Neufeld" or "Bern-Forsthaus" (green letterson the linked map) which are closest to the campus area. Switzerland is roughly divided into four sections with the A1 crossing the country from the west (Geneva) to the east (St. Gallen) and the A2 from the north (Basel) to the south (Bellinzona). No matter where you are coming from, you will end up sooner or later on one of these routes. The junction between these two major routes of traffic is near Olten.

In Switzerland, interstates are marked with green traffic signs, highways with blue and local/country roads with white ones. To plan your journey by car you may use viamichelin. To travel on Swiss interstates it is mandatory to purchase a Vignette (site is offered in German, French, and Italian only) that needs to be visibly stuck onto your windshield.

Parking your car:

Due to limited space parking in Bern is quite difficult and often very expensive. In the center of the capital there are no free parking slots at all. You can search on http://www.parking-bern.ch/ for available parking slots, but be warned that these slots may cost up to CHF 40.- per day.

It is cheaper to find one in a "Blue Zone" (German: "Blaue Zone"), where you can place your car for free for one hour during business hours, during lunch hours, and for the whole night. Mark the arrival-time on your parking disk (Parkscheibe) which has to be visibly placed behind your windshield.

If you intend to keep your car during business hours for more than one hour you should obtain a "Parkkarte für die Blaue Zone" for CHF 15.- which is valid for 24h. These tickets are available at every Bus-stop.

Local public transportation in Bern:

Traveling within Bern is very easy by the means of the buses and trams of Bernmobil. Every bus and tram stopps at Bern Main Station which serves as the core of Bernese public transportation. At virtually every bus and tram stop you will find a vehicle heading into your desired direction every 5 min during daytime and every 15 min at night. Last rides leave the Main Station exactly at midnight.

To find out what ticket you need to purchase look up your desired destination on the list at the bus/tram stop and see what cathegory it is placed in. Tickets can either be purchased by means of coins at every bus/tram stop or at the "Libero Shop". Before boarding a bus or tram you need to insert your "Mehrfahrtenkarte" into the vending machine (found at every bus/tram stop) to have a timestamp printed on it. Check your ticket to learn how many minutes it is valid.

How to get to the University Main Building

The site of the conference is University of Bern, Main Building. If you arrive by train, it is very close: After you have left the train, take the stairs or ramp from the platform down to a connection hall between the platforms. Please do not head into the main direction to the city but to the other end of the hall where there are three elevators that will take you up to the top floor. Don't let yourself confuse by the open-air cinema, just pass it and you'll be right in front of the main building as it is pictured on our homepage.

If you arrive by car, head towards "Bahnhof Parking" where limited parking is available at standard parking fees. Use the elevator as described in the previous paragraph.

When you have arrived at University Main Building, please start with Registration. You will receive your participant's documentation folder, and in case you have not yet paid the full amount, you should pay the balance of the fee in cash either in Swiss Francs (preferably) or Euros. (no cheques or credit cards will be accepted). During the conference, you should always wear your name card, since there is an entrance control at lecture rooms.
Registration is open on Sunday between 17:00 and 19:00. On the following days, the registration opens at 08:00 am. and closes at 10:00 am.

If you arrive on Sunday evening before 20:00, join us at the welcome
come-together in the University Main Building.
