Welcome to ECEM12
The series of European Conferences on Eye Movements
was started in 1981 by Rudolf Groner in Bern. The first meeting
was quite small, but demonstrated two things. First, eye movement
research was in an extremely productive phase. Second, there was
arguably a 'European' dimension to this which could benefit greatly
from communication and collaboration. The intervening years have
seen the conferences grow in size and scientific significance but
they have never lost their interdisciplinary emphasis. The biennial
ECEM is now the place where new work and new ideas in eye movement
research are to be found.
ECEM12 will take place for the first time in Scotland
and Dundee University Psychology Department is proud to host the
event. The University was founded in 1968 as part of the large-scale
expansion of University provision in the UK. Its rapid expansion
since, including the incorporation of Dundee's famous College of
Art, is testimony to its success. Dundee has both a Medical School
and a Law School. Its reputation in Life Sciences research is world
class. There are now approximately 12,000 students.
Dundee is a city of about 150,000 inhabitants, located
on the estuary of the river Tay on the East Coast of Scotland (where
it rains less and where the sun shines more). Edinburgh is about
50 miles to the South. Our 19-century reputation as the City of
'jam, jute and journalism' (it was famous for all of these) has
long since been overtaken by developments in the Information Sciences,
Electronics and Bioscience, all of which are now major employers.
Dundee is located only a stone's throw from the matchless scenery
of the Angus glens.
We welcome you most warmly to this twelfth meeting
of ECEM and will do our best to make it enjoyable and scientifically
stimulating.
